‘when I was much younger, I thought that one of the defining differences between a man and a boy was that a man had to shave everyday. then I grew up and shaved everyday and still felt like a boy, and still felt judged like a boy.

I knew I wasn’t a boy anymore, that I wasn’t the person that people saw when first introduced to me and that I needed to show a little bit more of a personal identity.

so the idea of a beard came into my head. my confidence grew and people showed more interest, particularly women. and I know that it resembles several of my favorite authors, historical figures and musicians’.

 

he is from Ballaghaderreen, but he came to Dublin for a couple of days and texted me so I could take his picture. when we met, he gave me a paper with his quote: ‘you ask why I grow a beard… the answer might seem weird. yet this public hair I feel I must share, ‘cos soon it might be bare’
